Breaking Barriers: Reflections on TEDxUNYP 2024
Over the past nine years, we've hosted more than 100 speakers on the TEDxUNYP stage—from Olympic and Paralympic medalists to space engineers, entrepreneurs, activists, and Oxford academics. And honestly, I still have to take a step back and remind myself that this is real. Watching people with such diverse experiences share ideas that genuinely make a difference—it's both humbling and a little surreal.
Each time I see a speaker connect with the audience, I'm reminded of why we do this. Ideas, when shared honestly and passionately, have this incredible way of opening minds, shifting perspectives, and sparking real impact. It's a powerful thing to witness, and being part of it each year is a privilege I don't take for granted.
Curating Connections: The Heart of TEDxUNYP
One of the most fulfilling parts of organising TEDxUNYP is curating a lineup that's as diverse as it is inspiring. I’m always on the lookout for voices that bring fresh perspectives, genuine passion, and, sometimes, a bit of edge. But above all, I look for speakers who are kind. A great idea or a big name isn't enough. TEDxUNYP is about building connections, and kindness and authenticity are what make these connections stick.
Then there’s my role as a speaker coach, where I have the privilege of helping each speaker polish their story until it shines. It’s a collaborative process involving a lot of listening, refining, and the occasional nervous laugh. Seeing someone find their voice and bring their full self to the stage? There’s honestly nothing like it. It’s not just about delivering a great talk. It's about helping people tap into their own authenticity and share a part of themselves with the world.
Reflecting on all the incredible speakers I've had the privilege to work with, I'm struck by just how much of their ideas, insights, and wisdom have woven their way into the fabric of who I am today. Each has left a unique imprint, broadening my perspective and deepening my understanding of the world. I carry a piece of their stories with me long after each event, and for that, I'm profoundly grateful.
TEDxUNYP: Pulling It All Together
As the big day gets closer, the excitement (and caffeine levels) definitely ramp up. From tech checks to stage design to the timing of every tiny detail, our goal is always the same: to create an experience where ideas resonate, speakers shine, and our audience feels inspired, moved, and maybe a little braver. Watching everything come together and knowing we've built a safe space where someone might just find the spark they need in their life makes every sleepless hour worth it.
None of this would be possible without the incredible people who bring TEDxUNYP to life. Our core team is the backbone, coordinating every detail. Our event partners help us realise our vision. Our volunteers create a welcoming experience for all. The production crew ensures everything runs smoothly behind the scenes, while our photographers capture the spirit of the day, and our makeup artist helps each speaker feel stage-ready. Together, they make the magic happen through true team effort.
This Year’s Theme: Breaking Barriers
"Breaking Barriers" might sound lofty, but our speakers brought it down to earth in the best ways possible. The thing about barriers is that they're not always there to stop us. Sometimes, they're there to show us our strength when we push through. We'll stumble, sure, but what matters is getting back up, learning, and moving forward. From breakthroughs in technology and science to breaking stereotypes and reshaping how we live and work, their talks and performances were designed to inspire the audience to rethink what's possible. And they did just that.
Looking Back, Moving Forward
As I reflect on this journey with TEDxUNYP, I'm filled with gratitude—for the speakers who have shared their stories with honesty and courage, for the team who gives so much of themselves to bring each event to life, and for the audience who shows up open to new ideas and possibilities. Each TEDxUNYP has taught me that the impact of these events goes far beyond the stage. It's in the connections sparked, the perspectives shifted, and the quiet moments when an idea plants a seed for future change.
"Breaking Barriers" wasn't just a theme this year. It was an invitation to all of us—to see obstacles differently, to embrace our stumbles, and to keep pushing forward. Being part of something that empowers people to explore their own potential and connect more deeply with others has been an incredible privilege. And as we look ahead, I can only imagine the new ways TEDxUNYP will continue to inspire, challenge, and, hopefully, change lives.
With gratitude and excitement for what's next,
Amit.
